There’s a whisper in the darkness
and a breath upon your cheek.
From your shoulder it is watching,
interrupting as you speak.
It will say that you’re not clever,
it reminds you when you’re wrong,
says you shouldn’t venture farther,
you should stay where you belong.
It will stroke your insecurity
and bind you to it’s will.
It will keep you from the danger,
it will hold you safe and still.
It can torture you with beauty
and corrupt you with a song;
It's a lullaby of failure.
It's an homage to your wrongs.
Majestic and triumphant
it will pull you in it’s arms,
suffocating your ambition
while protecting you from harm.
It is toxic, it is magic
but you need a clearer view.
Yes, the face is so familiar
for the monster, it is you.
