Word Count: 315
Summary: Another Happy Bottom instalment. Major Payne has to do battle with the cock Napoleon, who now rules Rooster's Folly. Can the cock be tamed? *As I've said, targeting 7-8 year olds (9?). I hope they'll be fun to read, or for younger children to listen to. All comments much appreciated. Regards

NAPOLEON

‘Cockadoodledoo’

Napoleon was a crazy cock
by that, I’m meaning mental
And nothing in his character
could be described as gentle.

The Major didn’t trust the cock,
who ruled the Rooster’s Folly
And counted beak marks on his bum
as painful ‘gifts’ from Wally.

Armed with stick and dustbin lid
the Major would defend
the freedom he believed was his
until the bitter end.

The farmyard was the battlefield
blood was spilled, by golly
so the Major swore he’d bag the bird
and post it back to Wally.

The Major’s plan, was scuppered
but skywards on his boot
a flying cock, down chimney pot
became covered up with soot.

He tumbled out, the flustered bird
his feathers not so gleaming,
to terrify Marie Duval
who’d finished off the cleaning.

Black dust fell, as swift she fled
Napoleon giving chase
Then out the door and down the path
as if it were a race.

It may have seemed a comic scene
but funny it was not
The Major warned - ‘You change your ways
or you are for the pot!’

Then along came Henrietta,
who stole Napoleon’s heart
And he was so polite to her
she liked him from the start.

With charm turned on, his temper gone
they found a place to meet
And then, one night, to his delight
‘I love you,’ said her tweet.

The very next day, in the yard
his star struck eyes on Hetty
Napoleon took some ‘cheep’ advice
from Mother Hen, called Betty.

He popped the question, she said yes
then love birds, on cloud nine
tied the knot, cos they were wed
and everything seemed fine.

Alas, poor Hetty fell unwell
became extremely moody
Napoleon worried, till Betty said,
‘She’s not ill, just broody.

Give her time, she’ll come round
it’s not you she’s rejecting
You should be proud, to tell the crowd...
your Hetty is eggspecting!”
