Smile

Summary: ID crisis

So many times I wanted to take
a snap of you
I wanted to take a snap of you
in some compromising position
Some overly awkward pose

Maybe with a milk moustache
Or having a sly-but-intentional nap
Or grinning-pretty-Goddamn ugly
Or maybe looking at me
In a soft, adoring way
with puppy eyes
And a well hung nose

Yes

I wanted to capture moments
That I knew would slip away
from me
Would slip away
from us
My camera could have been my keeping net
That could have caught
the memories of you (and I)

But I never did

I never did imprint those portraits
because I felt I could not steal
a part of you
that did not belong to me
I could not slip you into my wallet
or proudly display your familiar face
to some unbeknown stranger on a airplane
I could not bore them with stories
of our last vacation, our children
Your bad habits
My aging neurosis
Our electricity bills

I could not burden them
with the official photos
of the happy couple

The happy couple
that could not really be

So smile

(you’re on candid camera, SMILE you're the star of the show)
