Impossible things

To stand dry-eyed
when jazz bands
swagger by
To keep your mouth closed
when the group plays
‘Walk on by’
To sit straight-faced
while gulls and eagles
swirl into the sky
To carry on as normal
when a loved one
says good-bye
To watch in silence
while your children
live a lie.
