Once there was a time when heroes were young
They were bold, they were strong, they were ready to run
For their country and their rich general's tongue
But after all the fighting has been done
We turn to the real heroes who are always unsung
There are invalids, widows, who have all been stung
By the tears of the fortune which has done them so wrong
There are mentally retarded, there are homeless and one
Man who lies dying for the want of a crumb
Battered children and wives, the blind, deaf and the dumb
The ragged poor who seek for some
Sort of life that will never become
Anything more than a dank, dark slum
So what is a hero? Not a soldier with a gun
But people who have fought with despair and won!
