Dare I Speak?

Summary: This was a poem I wrote the day I became a member of Amnesty International. I have since become even more passionate about human rights and still feel passionate about this piece. See what you think.

Dare I Speak?
Hear my apology, before I begin, for wronging the restrictions in ‘freedom’ of thought,
For this, it seems, is not ours.
It belongs to the ‘rule-makers’ of opinion,
Those who set the boundaries in creativity and expression.
I will go quietly, as I cannot speak.
Take my words prisoner for sake of your irritation.
I have broken rules of blindness and am ‘free’.
So, come jail my thoughts, murder my neighbour and live forever.
Sew my lips with silk as harshly as your eyes,
Do not miss a stitch and I will watch in disgust, that which you ignore.
Strangle my hands to as limp a state as your narrow heart,
Trip me if I should walk away.
But I shall not so much as blink.
My eyes shall glaze before they close and cast their watch upon you,
As I fade away from torturous vision.
Amnesty echoes me still.
