Funeral for a friend

How dark the day my love, my love
Pull back the curtain, let me see
Trace the raindrop with cold finger
Forever let it be

The fire burns bright but cannot warm
It cannot chase away the chill
From soul as cold as the grave, my love,
You journey to against my will.

The procession bears you by my love
Black box, black drape, black car.
Lost to me you are, my love
Dead and gone from me you are.

Your wife, your children, ride behind
Up the hill and through the gate
And by the graveside in the rain
Parson and mourners wait.

Heavy tolls the bell my love
It tears my soul apart
Yes heavy, heavy tolls the bell
But how much heavier my heart.

I groan, I bleed my love, to lay
Beside you 'neath the fragrant sod
Safe in your arms, as over us
Snowdrop and crocus nod.

Oh wait for me my love, my love
Where ocean meets another shore
And I will be with you my love
For ever and forever more.
