The Greatest Fear
To the edge of the wood and beyond
I dare not come by myself anymore
the innards of the trees are moaning
invisible monsters sliding between,
to the edge of your flesh and inward
I dare not come any further without love
or the dreams of comfort to pretend with
so that to hold you would make any sense,
to the edge of your fingers and thumbs
I dare not come with chains and rings
or wafers for tongues or purple curtains
your religion still leads me to disbelief,
I cannot come any further.
