Clouded by the large quantities of alcohol consumed, Lucy's brain thumped against her skull, adding to her frustrations. Since losing her job, misfortune chipped away at her soul, destroying what little remained of her miserable life until it formed the unfixable state it had become. After mixing with the wrong crowd, her parents disowned her and evicted her from the family home before the shame of her dirty secret reached judgmental neighbours. Having an unmarried mother for a daughter didn't fit into their plans.
Through her tears, Lucy recalled the last time she spoke to her dad. She'd arrived home from job hunting and he stood on the doorstep blocking her from entering the house.
"Lucy," he snarled, "you will never amount to anything being a pushover all your life. You're like those dirty sluts who prowl the night looking for men! The type that doesn't think twice about contraception or what the neighbours will think!" he bellowed.
"Bastard!"
"What did you just say?" he roared.
"Bastard!" She repeated, her anger fuelling her confidence.
"Now let me in! All I need are some clothes then I'll be gone forever!"
"Now look here young lady…"
"No! It's about time someone stood up to you. It's too late for mother, she's dead, but at least over there on the other side she's happy. Free from you!"
She remembered being slapped and landing on the floor in pain. Seeing blood. Nosebleed? Baby? Then nothing until she woke up in hospital.
